THE GALLERIES OF THE PHIPPS CENTER FOR THE ARTS,
THE HEALING ARTS PROGRAM,*
and THE ENRICHING ARTS PROGRAM**
The Phipps seeks submissions of recent work from individual visual artists in Wisconsin and Minnesota for a variety of exhibition opportunities.*** Accepted artists’ work will be presented in The Galleries of The Phipps in 2011 and/or at Hudson Hospital in 2010 and/or at Croixdale Senior Housing Center, Bayport in 2010.
Submissions will be juried by members of the Visual Arts Council, which is comprised of artists, arts professionals, and art enthusiasts from the area. Artists will be notified by mail of the jury’s decision no later than Friday, October 30, 2009.
The postmarked deadline for submissions is July 1, 2009.
TO SUBMIT WORK FOR CONSIDERATION, SEND THE FOLLOWING:
1. 15 to 20 35 mm slides representing recent work in a 9” x 12” plastic slide sheet. Label each slide with your name, a number or title, and indicate top. The jury will view slides #1 – 4 first. Artists who wish to submit digital images on CD must follow instructions on page two and send materials in #2 - #4 below.
2. A corresponding reference sheet listing slides by number and title with size, technique, materials, and price for each piece. For images sent on a CD, a printout with thumbnails of all images by number and title with size, technique, materials, and price for each piece. Include artist’s first and last name on each page.
3. A biographical sketch and/or artist statement. Artists sending images on a CD must provide this as a hard copy printout, not as a document saved on the CD. The bio/statement must include the artist’s complete contact information: address, phone number, and e-mail address.
4. A self-addressed stamped envelope of appropriate size and with sufficient postage to return all materials (including CD’s – The Phipps does not want to take responsibility for discarding these.)

* In 2001, The Phipps and Hudson Hospital embarked on an innovative collaboration to exhibit original work by regional artists throughout the hospital and specialty clinics. At any given time, work by approximately 20 artists is on temporary display in waiting areas, conference rooms, patient and staff corridors, procedure rooms, and patient rooms. The Healing Arts Program has enhanced the healing environment of the hospital while providing significant public exposure for participating artists.
** In 2006, The Phipps expanded its outreach exhibition programs to Croixdale Senior Housing Center in Bayport, Minnesota. Work is displayed in the most public areas of this new facility on a rotating basis.
*** The submission process for group exhibitions and other special proposals is similar to that for individual artists. Please contact The Phipps in advance for more information.
Instructions for Digital Submission
If you wish to use a CD to submit image files, please write your first and last name on the CD using permanent ink and follow the steps below:
Image files:
1. Image files may be created using a digital camera (3.0 megapixel or higher is recommended), a scan of a photograph or slide of your artwork, or a scan of the actual work. If you use a digital camera, be sure that the white balance is set appropriately for the lighting you are using, or use your camera’s automatic white balance. If you use a scanner to scan a slide or photograph, be sure the resolution is set high enough to give a good quality image. (See your scanner manual.)
2. Crop the images so that the entire artwork is visible, but no extraneous background or framing is showing.
3. (Optional) Make any necessary adjustments to ensure that the image accurately represents the artwork and embed a color profile when you save your work. (If you do not know how to calibrate your monitor, you are probably better off leaving the image alone.)
4. Image files should conform to the following standards:
• Preferred image size is at least 1200 pixels on the shortest side. Smaller images will be accepted, but may not represent your work as well. Significantly larger images will be scaled down; please see file size restrictions below—don’t send us the full-sized scan used to print your giclees!
• Save images in JPEG format (high or very high quality); do NOT submit using Power Point or any other program.
• File size should not exceed 3 MB.
5. File names for image files should be in the form last name_first initial_image number_image title. Again, abbreviate as needed to keep file name a reasonable length; just make sure we’ll be able to match the file name to your image list.
6. Place the four images you wish to have viewed first in a separate folder, labeled “View First”. If you do not indicate which images you wish to have viewed first, we will use the first four images.
Supplementary Materials:
Follow directions in #2 - #4 on page one for materials that must be sent with your CD.
