Quick Start to Success with Watercolor
March 23rd - April 27th

Have you always wanted to try watercolor, but been put off by its reputation for difficulty? Or did you try it and give up in frustration over streaky washes, muddy color, or overworked areas? Watercolor can be tricky if you try to force it to behave, but it’s a generous, magical medium if you are willing to accept its gifts. The natural action of water, pigment, and paper produce a wealth of beautiful effects all on their own, if we will only let them. We will focus on gaining an understanding of the inherent behavior of the medium through practicing a variety of special watercolor techniques. Participants should request a suggested materials list when registering.

Six Weeks
Tuesday
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Session 3: Mar. 23 – Apr. 27
Class Fee: $185 per session

Instructor Carolyn Streed, of Dragonfly Spirit Studio, began painting four years ago, and has quickly achieved success as a professional artist. She was a student of Lynne Baur for two years before joining her as an instructor at The Phipps. Having started painting so recently, Streed understands the challenges of taking up the medium as an adult and will help you overcome your fear.

Painting with Natural Pigments

Saturday, April 24th

Make your own paints using natural pigments found in the environment - rocks and clay from the local area, and more from other areas in the country. Students will learn how to pulverize these samples into a powder and then make egg tempura paint from the powders. Participants will then use the egg tempera to make a small painting. Bring a water container, paint brustes, six plastic or glass containers or a small plastic or glass muffin pan, mortar and pestle, and small jars for saving leftover pigments.

Saturday
April 24
10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Fee: $55

Instructor Gloria Adrian is a watercolor and oil painter whose work has been shown throughout western Wisconsin. As a result of becoming involved in The Phipps and its What We Need is Here project, she began experimenting with making her own paints and using natural materials from the area. For the last six months, she has been making egg tempera paint with natural pigments.
