Be a Wizard, Harry Potter Puppets and Play

Make your own Harry Potter character using Pariscraft, Sculptamold and acrylic paint. Use fabric, trim, fur, and buttons to design your puppet’s costume. Work magic with the class to write an original play, record a sound track, and perform for family and friends using a professional puppet stage with backdrops, music, and sound effects. No muggles allowed.

Wonders of Weaving

Pottery on the Wheel

Learn foundational techniques of throwing pottery on the wheel. Create cups and bowls on the potter’s wheel and finish them in a variety of fun and traditional ways. In the end you will bring home functional pottery you can use, fired with colorful food-safe glazes.
Pottery students must wear closed-toed shoes when using the pottery wheels - no sandals or flip-flops.

Around the World on the 45th Parallel

What do Torino, Italy; Nayoro, Japan; Krasnodar, Russia; and Hudson, Wisconsin, USA have in common? They are just some of the places half-way between the equator and the North Pole on the 45th parallel. Explore the culture, art, and food of 45th parallel countries and work together to create a large northern hemisphere sculpture. Each student also will make a hand-bound art book. The sculpture and books will be displayed at The Phipps in January as part of an art exhibit on the 45th parallel.

Sewing Softies

Sock babies, a pocket elf, twinkles – Little Sister dolls are part of the softies line-up. There will be patterns to follow or you can come up with your own designs to stitch by hand or with a sewing machine. Bring old clothes, t-shirts, or felt to reuse for your softie, and embellish with beads, buttons, and pipe cleaners. There will be a little of you in every creature you make.

Making Otedama

Otedama are traditional Japanese juggling toys – small, fabric toys filled with adzuki beans or rice for weight – originating in the 9th century. They have evolved into a wonderful variety of shapes. Make your own set to bring home with directions for how to juggle them. Bring a sack lunch.
