Youth Medication and Special Needs Policy

Participants under the age of 18 who are engaged in The Phipps sponsored or administered activites and who require medication, must have the medication administered by a parent or guardian.

Participants with special needs must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Art Jam

Ages 6 – 12

Campers enrolled in two or more classes each week (or a single full-day, week-long class) can extend each day that their classes meet by taking part in supervised activities before, between, and after class. *Limited to 15 campers each week.

Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day. Campers can spend up to 90 minutes each visit to Art Jam, before, between, or after a class.

A supervisor will contact parents one week prior to the start of each week to confirm the camper’s Art Jam schedule.

Cartooning Like a Pro

ages 7 - 14

Cartooning is a fun way to learn and improve your drawing skills. Create characters of your own, make a comic strip or book and produce your own cartoon products like greeting cards, bookmarks, and more.

Folk Art Memoryware

Ages 7 and up

Learn the history of memory jar folk art and create your own using personal and found objects. Jars and all sorts of interesting fill to surround and showcase personal items are provided. Bring favorite small items such as old buttons, shells, coins, game pieces, or old keys.

Create works of art for the great outdoors! Students will make three projects for the garden and outdoor spaces using found objects, trinkets, and tiles.

Going in Circles, Costa Rica Style

Ages 8 - 11

Make a huge, decorative wheel like those made in Costa Rica using bright bio-colors and geometric shapes. Also, make a rainforest parrot come to life by using tropical colored chalk and glue.

You Too, Can Make a Toucan

Fishy-fish-fish! ((25th Anniversary))

Ages 7 and up

Let’s go fishin’! Make your own fish…fish puppets, that is! Using cardboard, cereal boxes, tea boxes, chip bags, and plastic bottles, students will make magnificent, silvery, slippery fish that can swim through the air! They’ll even make them so they can blow bubbles! Wow! Students are invited to swim their fish in The Phipps 25th Anniversary parade on July 19. Don’t worry, you won’t get wet! (Ask for a short list of recyclable items to bring to class.)

Bag-Head Birds and Beasts ((25th anniversary))

Ages 7 and up

Stick your head in a double-paper bag and become whatever bird or animal you want to be! Learn about birds and animals living in the St. Croix River Valley as inspiration for masks constructed from paper grocery bags, cereal boxes, plastic soda bottles, and other waste-stream materials. Participants are encouraged to join The Phipps 25th Anniversary parade on July 19. After learning this technique, students will be making masks at home like crazy and will never look at a bag of groceries (or garbage) the same again! (Ask for a short list of recyclable items to bring to class.)

Printmaking Pizzazz

Ages 6 - 13

Create wearable art and more using various printmaking techniques. Make a t-shirt, colorful prints on paper to be framed, gift wrap and tags, and much more. Please specify child shirt size.

Shield of the Lakota

Ages 5 - 7

See an authentic Lakota headdress, listen to a Native American tale, learn about the their respect for nature, and design a shield using earth colors and thick brown paper, then decorate it with turtle or frog symbols and feathers.

Molas of the Cuna Indians

Ages 7 - 9

Design a mola inspired by the appliqué textiles of the Cuna Indians of Panama with a dolphin, parrot, gecko, turtle, or another tropical animal. Listen to legends that the Cuna use to teach children respect for all things in nature.

Art of the Pacific Northwest Tribes

The Haida made totem poles, art, and legends of ravens, whales, turtles, beaver, and wolves. Learn how to draw the art of the Haida and Tlingit from Alaska. Listen to their legends and understand what they were trying to teach with their stories.

Colorful Masks on Parade ((25th Anniversary))

Paint your own colorful mask using bio-colors and decorating it with yarn and feathers. Make a costume using a brown paper bag and bio-color to match your mask. Wear these in the parade on Saturday, July 19.

Opera Masks of Japan ((25th Anniversary))

See authentic Noh masks worn by actors in the Japanese Opera, and create your own – warriors, monkeys, Japanese princesses, or ugly old men. Add beads and jewelry, and paint with acrylic paints. Wear the mask in the parade on Saturday, July 19.

Dove Marionettes ((25th Anniversary))

Using one plastic soda bottle, one wire coat hanger, and seven plastic grocery bags, make pole-operated dove marionettes that can fly through the air! Fly your dove in The Phipps 25th anniversary parade! The dove is not only the symbol of peace, but also of love and the creative spirit. Let peace, love and the creative spirit fly!

Horns ((25th Anniversary))

Ages 10 and up

Make your own set of horns! Using a wire coat hanger, corrugated cardboard, plastic grocery bags, and papier mache, construct your own set of bull-like horns. You don’t have to be a Viking to attend this workshop, but you may feel like one, once you proudly don your magnificent hand-crafted horns in The Phipps 25th anniversary parade!

Stop Buggin’ Me! ((25th Anniversary))

Ages 6 and up

Bug out! Make bug puppets out of trash! Using the vast array of insects native to the St. Croix River Valley as inspiration, students will make mosquitoes, gnats, dragonflies, bumblebees and more out of coat hangers, plastic grocery bags, cellophane, soda bottles, and other assorted trash. Explorer’s Art Camp - Creative play. . .all day!

Ages 6 and up

New projects and new cultures! Explore art from different cultures throughout history. Painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking techniques introduce children to the art of medieval Europe, Japan, Egypt, Native Eskimo Inuits, and Colonial America. Snacks, music, costumes and games of these various cultures dramatize the study.

For Wizards, Mudbloods, and Muggles...Harry Potter Puppets and Play ((25th anniversary))

Ages 8 - 11

Make your own Harry Potter character puppet – Harry, Hermione, Dumbledore, or whomever you choose – and then work with the class to write an original play about Harry Potter that will be presented in a big puppet theatre with backdrops, music, and sound effects. The play will be presented on Saturday, July 19 as part of The Phipps 25th anniversary celebration.

Inspiration from a Far-Away Nation ((25th Anniversary))

Ages 9 - 12

Become inspired by the peaceful people of Bhutan, creating prayer flags and prayer wheels to be made into a group art installation for The Phipps 25th anniversary celebration. Hand- and machine-sewing, fabric painting, block printing, and kinetic art concepts will be explored. A special slide presentation by local world travelers Sally and Bill Friedlander will show students the life and landscape of Bhutan. (Projects will be returned to participants following the 25th anniversary celebration.)

Philippe in Monet’s Pond

Van Gogh and Friends

Spend the week getting to know the colorful Impressionist artists and their colorful work. Use a variety of art materials and techniques to create a mixed media painting styled after Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” sculpt a 3-dimensional still-life painting in the style of Paul Cezanne, make a huge poster of yourself as a circus star in the style of Toulouse-Lautrec, create a watercolor painting/collage after Claude Monet’s famous “Waterlillies,” and dot to dot with Georges Seurat.

Wearable Art! “Project Runway” for Kids!

Portrait Drawing and Painting

Mootisse (Matisse) Wants to Play

Using crayons and liquid colors, students will draw Mootisse, who is a funny bull from the story, “When Pigasso Met Mootisse.” They also will make a big bowl of fruit using watercolors.

Matisse and YOU Design a Crazy House

Ages 7 - 9

Matisse used bright colors and repeated shapes in his art. With oil pastels, liquid watercolor, construction paper, and shapes of all kinds, students will design a house around a theme of their choosing – sports, the circus, fruit, shapes, and more. They will make an inside room, wild wallpaper, and floor tile to complete a crazy room for a crazy house!

Make Room for Matisse and His Figures

Using oil pastels and liquid watercolor, bring to life a room like Matisse’s with brilliant color and repeated shapes. Students also will use simple figures to show actions like leaping, dancing, or running, and then will design a huge poster using scratch art together with cut construction paper shapes and a title to make a unique Matisse-inspired masterpiece!

Hand-building with Clay

Ages 7 – 12

Discover the many ways to work with clay -- pinching, coiling, and slab construction --and use these skills to create your own work. The week of July 7, the class project will be animal sculpture and the week of July 21, the focus will be on masks. Pottery on the Wheel for Teens

ages 13 - 18
