How to register for a Class Class Descriptions
/ Instructors Campers enrolled in two or more classes each week (or a single full-day, week-long class) can extend each day that their classes meet by taking part in supervised activities before, between, and after class. *Limited to 15 campers each week. Five Days ages 7 - 14 Cartooning is a fun way to learn and improve your drawing skills. Create characters of your own, make a comic strip or book and produce your own cartoon products like greeting cards, bookmarks, and more. Five Days Instructor: Amy Moreland Ages 7 - 14 Animation is a great way to improve your drawing skills and have fun! Learn the drawing techniques, tracing skills, and camera operation that will make your drawings come alive on your own DVD. Five Days Instructor: Amy Moreland This popular half-day camp provides mixed media exploration of 2-d – drawing, painting, printmaking, computer graphics, cartooning, and collage – ,as well as 3-d – sculpture and mixed media constructions – art techniques to stimulate the creativity of your child. Five Days Instructor: Karron Nottingham Ages 8 - 12 Create one-of-kind drawings and paintings of a favorite animal or pet. Bring photos of your pets. Four Days Instructor: Gina Pedriana-Basche Ages 8 - 12 Create paintings and sculptures of real and imaginary shoe designs. Mixed media will be used. Bring at least five different shoes to first day of class. Four days Instructor: Gina Pedriana-Basche Ages 7 and up Learn the history of memory jar folk art and create your own using personal and found objects. Jars and all sorts of interesting fill to surround and showcase personal items are provided. Bring favorite small items such as old buttons, shells, coins, game pieces, or old keys. Ages 6 – 13 Create works of art for the great outdoors! Students will make three projects for the garden and outdoor spaces using found objects, trinkets, and tiles. Three Days Instructor: Sarah Tennessen Going in Circles, Costa Rica Style Ages 8 - 11 Make a huge, decorative wheel like those made in Costa Rica using bright bio-colors and geometric shapes. Also, make a rainforest parrot come to life by using tropical colored chalk and glue. Three Days Instructor: Sylvia Benson You Too, Can Make a Toucan Use tropical colored liquid watercolors and oil pastels to create colorful insects in wild backgrounds. With glue and chalk on black paper, make a toucan that is stunning. Three Days Instructor: Sylvia Benson This joyous camp combines Kindermusik movement and song with color, texture, paint, and fun! Children will learn about the basics of music, meet famous artists past and present, create art, dance, and sing. Two days Instructor: Peggy Doekson and Annie Rengel Fishy-fish-fish! ((25th Anniversary)) Let’s go fishin’! Make your own fish…fish puppets, that is! Using cardboard, cereal boxes, tea boxes, chip bags, and plastic bottles, students will make magnificent, silvery, slippery fish that can swim through the air! They’ll even make them so they can blow bubbles! Wow! Students are invited to swim their fish in The Phipps 25th Anniversary parade on July 19. Don’t worry, you won’t get wet! (Ask for a short list of recyclable items to bring to class.) Two Days Instructor: Chris Lutter Bag-Head Birds and Beasts ((25th anniversary)) Stick your head in a double-paper bag and become whatever bird or animal you want to be! Learn about birds and animals living in the St. Croix River Valley as inspiration for masks constructed from paper grocery bags, cereal boxes, plastic soda bottles, and other waste-stream materials. Participants are encouraged to join The Phipps 25th Anniversary parade on July 19. After learning this technique, students will be making masks at home like crazy and will never look at a bag of groceries (or garbage) the same again! (Ask for a short list of recyclable items to bring to class.) Three Days Instructor: Chris Lutter-Gardella Printmaking Pizzazz Create wearable art and more using various printmaking techniques. Make a t-shirt, colorful prints on paper to be framed, gift wrap and tags, and much more. Please specify child shirt size. Three Days Instructor: Sarah Tennessen Shield of the Lakota See an authentic Lakota headdress, listen to a Native American tale, learn about the their respect for nature, and design a shield using earth colors and thick brown paper, then decorate it with turtle or frog symbols and feathers. Two days Instructor: Sylvia Benson Molas of the Cuna Indians Design a mola inspired by the appliqué textiles of the Cuna Indians of Panama with a dolphin, parrot, gecko, turtle, or another tropical animal. Listen to legends that the Cuna use to teach children respect for all things in nature. Instructor: Sylvia Benson Art of the Pacific Northwest Tribes The Haida made totem poles, art, and legends of ravens, whales, turtles, beaver, and wolves. Learn how to draw the art of the Haida and Tlingit from Alaska. Listen to their legends and understand what they were trying to teach with their stories. Two Days Instructor: Sylvia Benson Learn basic tie-dying techniques while having hands-on experience throughout the process of creating two tie-dyed garments. One day Instructor: Caroline Wolf Colorful Masks on Parade ((25th Anniversary)) Two Days Instructor: Sylvia Benson Opera Masks of Japan ((25th Anniversary)) See authentic Noh masks worn by actors in the Japanese Opera, and create your own – warriors, monkeys, Japanese princesses, or ugly old men. Add beads and jewelry, and paint with acrylic paints. Wear the mask in the parade on Saturday, July 19. Four Days Instructor: Sylvia Benson Dove Marionettes ((25th Anniversary)) Using one plastic soda bottle, one wire coat hanger, and seven plastic grocery bags, make pole-operated dove marionettes that can fly through the air! Fly your dove in The Phipps 25th anniversary parade! The dove is not only the symbol of peace, but also of love and the creative spirit. Let peace, love and the creative spirit fly! One Day Instructor: Chris Lutter-Gardella Ages 10 and up Make your own set of horns! Using a wire coat hanger, corrugated cardboard, plastic grocery bags, and papier mache, construct your own set of bull-like horns. You don’t have to be a Viking to attend this workshop, but you may feel like one, once you proudly don your magnificent hand-crafted horns in The Phipps 25th anniversary parade! Two Days Instructor: Chris Lutter-Gardella Stop Buggin’ Me! ((25th Anniversary)) Ages 6 and up Bug out! Make bug puppets out of trash! Using the vast array of insects native to the St. Croix River Valley as inspiration, students will make mosquitoes, gnats, dragonflies, bumblebees and more out of coat hangers, plastic grocery bags, cellophane, soda bottles, and other assorted trash. They will also make funky noise-makers that buzz! Students are invited to buzz their bugs in The Phipps 25th anniversary parade on July 19. (Ask for a short list of recyclable items to bring to class.) Two Days Instructor: Chris Lutter-Gardella Explorer’s Art Camp - Creative play. . .all day! Ages 6 and up New projects and new cultures! Explore art from different cultures throughout history. Painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking techniques introduce children to the art of medieval Europe, Japan, Egypt, Native Eskimo Inuits, and Colonial America. Snacks, music, costumes and games of these various cultures dramatize the study. Five Days Instructor: Karron Nottingham For Wizards, Mudbloods, and Muggles...Harry Potter Puppets and Play ((25th anniversary)) Ages 8 - 11 Make your own Harry Potter character puppet – Harry, Hermione, Dumbledore, or whomever you choose – and then work with the class to write an original play about Harry Potter that will be presented in a big puppet theatre with backdrops, music, and sound effects. The play will be presented on Saturday, July 19 as part of The Phipps 25th anniversary celebration. Five Days Instructor: Sylvia Benson Inspiration from a Far-Away Nation ((25th Anniversary)) Ages 9 - 12 Become inspired by the peaceful people of Bhutan, creating prayer flags and prayer wheels to be made into a group art installation for The Phipps 25th anniversary celebration. Hand- and machine-sewing, fabric painting, block printing, and kinetic art concepts will be explored. A special slide presentation by local world travelers Sally and Bill Friedlander will show students the life and landscape of Bhutan. (Projects will be returned to participants following the 25th anniversary celebration.) Five Days Instructor: Lana Sjoberg Join the Band! ((25th anniversary)) Ages 4 - 6 Create homemade instruments from scratch using recycled materials. Students are encouraged to bring their instruments and join the 25th anniversary parade on Saturday, July 19. Three Days Instructor: Caroline Wolf Ages 4 - 9 Learn about Native American culture while creating a painted drum and dream catcher. Three Days Instructor: Caroline Wolf Ages 10 and up Discover new worlds of wool as you learn the old traditions of felting. Learn how to card raw wool and create a 3-d sculpture – a teddy bear, doll, fairy, bird, or mythical creature – using a dry needle technique One Day Instructor: Greta Hammelman Ages 6 – 11 Use a variety of drawing tools and techniques including oil pastels, chalk pastels, colored pencil, drawing pencil, charcoal, conte sticks, markers and more while exploring the 2-dimensional world of still-life, landscape, perspective, figure studies, portraiture and cartoon drawing. Five Days Instructor: Karron Nottingham Ages 10 - 15 Explore a variety of drawing tools including oil pastels, chalk pastels, colored pencil, drawing pencil, charcoal, conte sticks, markers and more, and be instructed in the elements and principles of art to enhance your drawing skills. Techniques including shading, texture, composition, perspective, portraiture, and use of color will be explored in the creation of landscapes, figure studies, still-life, portraits and more! Five Days Instructor: Karron Nottingham Ages 5 - 7 Using oil pastels and watercolor, make pictures of Claude Monet’s garden with beautiful flowers like irises and daisies. Then paint his pond with a sailboat and dots of insects in the water and flowers. See slides taken by the instructor of Monet’s house, pond, and garden. Three Days Instructor: Sylvia Benson Ages 7 - 9 Using oil pastels and watercolor, make Philippe, the frog, in Claude Monet’s pond and learn how to make reflections of flowers in the water. Make another painting of Monet and see slides taken by the instructor of his house, pond and garden. Three Days Instructor: Sylvia Benson Ages 8 - 11 Using tempera paint, oil pastels, and watercolors, create three paintings of water and flowers inspired by Claude Monet’s impressionistic painting. See slides taken by the instructor of his house, pond, and garden. Three Days Instructor: Sylvia Benson Ages 6 and up Spend the week getting to know the colorful Impressionist artists and their colorful work. Use a variety of art materials and techniques to create a mixed media painting styled after Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” sculpt a 3-dimensional still-life painting in the style of Paul Cezanne, make a huge poster of yourself as a circus star in the style of Toulouse-Lautrec, create a watercolor painting/collage after Claude Monet’s famous “Waterlillies,” and dot to dot with Georges Seurat. Five Days Instructor: Karron Nottingham Wearable Art! “Project Runway” for Kids! Ages 6 and up Challenge your creativity and design skills in the creation of “wearable art” pieces, such as hats, tops, skirts, capes, jewelry, and accessories, all made from paper, tape, paint, and string, and embellished with sequins, feathers, beads, and more. Five Days Instructor: Karron Nottingham Ages 8 - 12 Create different types of portraits, including a self-portrait. Students will look at a variety of different portrait artists throughout history and will learn how to draw facial features. Self-expression and creativity are the focal point of this “how to” class. Four Days Instructor: Gina Pedriana-Basche Ages 8 - 12 Learn about the life and art of this Mexican-born artist, and create your own personal sculpture sure to be reassured as an invaluable keepsake. Four Days Instructor: Gina Pedriana-Basche Mootisse (Matisse) Wants to Play Ages 5 - 7 Using crayons and liquid colors, students will draw Mootisse, who is a funny bull from the story, “When Pigasso Met Mootisse.” They also will make a big bowl of fruit using watercolors. Three Days Instructor: Sylvia Benson Matisse and YOU Design a Crazy House Ages 7 - 9 Matisse used bright colors and repeated shapes in his art. With oil pastels, liquid watercolor, construction paper, and shapes of all kinds, students will design a house around a theme of their choosing – sports, the circus, fruit, shapes, and more. They will make an inside room, wild wallpaper, and floor tile to complete a crazy room for a crazy house! Three Days Instructor: Sylvia Benson Make Room for Matisse and His Figures Ages 8 - 11 Using oil pastels and liquid watercolor, bring to life a room like Matisse’s with brilliant color and repeated shapes. Students also will use simple figures to show actions like leaping, dancing, or running, and then will design a huge poster using scratch art together with cut construction paper shapes and a title to make a unique Matisse-inspired masterpiece! Three Days Instructor: Sylvia Benson Ages 8 - 11 Learn jewelry basics for creating earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. Have fun designing patterns using beads, buttons and shells. Five Days Instructor: Greta Hammelman Ages 11 - 16 Practice basics and learn creative patterns that produce head-turning results. Choose from earring, necklace, and bracelet designs to create your own set. Five Days Instructor: Greta Hammelman Ages 4 - 6 Create a 1 to 20 accordion book using stickers and magazine pictures. Students will work on cutting, folding, tracing, and number concept skills. Number stories, songs, and chants will enhance the experience Four Days Instructor: Caroline Wolf Ages 4 - 6 Create an A to Z accordion book using animal pictures. Ages 7 – 12 Learn basic techniques of throwing pottery on the wheel. Experiment with your new skills while receiving one-on-one attention from the instructor. Return Friday morning of the class week to glaze (drop-in hours are 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.) Class size limited to eight. Monday – Wednesday, Friday morning June 16 - 18
