Quick Start to Success with Watercolor

Have you always wanted to try watercolor, but been put off by its reputation for difficulty? Or did you try it and give up in frustration over streaky washes, muddy color, or overworked areas? Watercolor can be tricky if you try to force it to behave, but it’s a generous, magical medium if you are willing to accept its gifts. The natural action of water, pigment, and paper produce a wealth of beautiful effects all on their own, if we will only let them. We will focus on gaining an understanding of the inherent behavior of the medium through practicing a variety of special watercolor techniques. Participants should request a suggested materials list when registering.

Instructor Carolyn Streed, of Dragonfly Spirit Studio, began painting four years ago, and has quickly achieved success as a professional artist. She was a student of Lynne Baur for two years before joining her as an instructor at The Phipps. Having started painting so recently, Streed understands the challenges of taking up the medium as an adult and will help you overcome your fear.

About our pottery classes:
Students enrolled in pottery classes have access to the pottery studio on Fridays from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 - noon. No instruction will be given during the open studio sessions.

For each class, students are asked to wear clothes that can get dirty, and bring an old hand-towel, a sketchbook-type journal, and a basic tool kit. Tool kits will be available for purchase for $15 on the first day of class. The class fee includes one 25 lb. bag of clay, glazes, and firing. Additional clay may be purchased from the instructor for $15 per bag, which includes glazes and firing.

Beginning Pottery on the Wheel
for teens and adults

Participants will learn basic techniques for throwing pots on the potter’s wheel. Class size is limited to eight.

Eight Sessions
Mondays
Sept. 28 - Nov. 16
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Fee: $207

Instructor Dick Morse became excited about working with clay when he was a student of Warren MacKenzie at the University of Minnesota. While working as an elementary school teacher, he spent many of his summers making pottery. Morse began working in his studio full time after completing his teaching career in 2002. His functional pottery is available in Duluth, Lake City, Northfield, at regional art fairs, and at his Stillwater studio.

Clay Sculpture and Raku Firing

This class will be an active exploration of sculpture in clay although all techniques learned in the class can be utilized in both sculpture and pottery for all skill levels. Students will work using structural techniques of hand-building such as slab construction and the use of armatures, and will look at how the pottery wheel can be used for sculpture as well as pottery. Demonstrations by the instructor and one-on-one attention will be provided. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a raku firing. Class size is limited to eight.

Eight Sessions
Tuesdays
Sept. 27 - Nov. 17
6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Fee: $207

Instructor Joel Thorson is from Hudson, Wisconsin and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin – River Falls. He explores the functional and non-functional ceramic form, searching for innate spiritual meaning through simple yet elegant design. Thorson finds ceramics the perfect medium for self-expression because clay is so expressive and easy to manipulate.

Beginning/Intermediate Pottery on the Wheel

Participants of all skill levels are welcome in this class. Beginning students will be taught basic wheel techniques, while advanced and continuing students will receive instruction of more complex forms. Class size is limited to eight.

Eight Sessions
Wednesdays
Sept. 30 - Nov. 18
